The Head of Engineering & Commissioning CoE is the lead technical manager in project teams, troubleshooting operational issues, providing technical solutions to operational problems, contributing to new products implementation, implementing existing products and services, and providing overall upkeep and maintenance of designated areas of engineering management, commissioning, and handover. Interfaces with vendors and acts in compliance with industry and Company technical requirements, standards, policies, and procedures.

The individual in this role provides technical leadership and is responsible for the global management Commissioning Program and all Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) within the CoE. The CoE Head acts as a key contributor in establishing various technical standards, policies, and procedures typical to the data center industry, which will be executed by the Execution Pillar team members.

The Head of Engineering & Commissioning CoE may occasionally and temporarily act as datacenter manager (Operations / Facility Manager) for select Compass Datacenters location(s).


Engineering & Commissioning Management

  • Embrace, and permeate throughout the organization, the Compass Culture and Core Convictions to deliver best in class engineering and commissioning oversight

  • Hire, train and scope out defined growth opportunities for Facility, Engineering and Commissioning CoE team
  • Communicate priorities with Engineering and Commissioning team and conduct regular training and coaching engagements
  • Liaise with Radix IoT for design, upgrades, implementation of controls and monitoring systems as well as Error Elimination Platform (enCOMPASS View and enCOMPASS Ops)
  • Oversee startup and commissioning of new HVAC, UPS, Generator, BMS and other facility related equipment
  • Oversee planning, development and coordination of process and procedure-based programs and onsite execution of commissioning a state-of-the-art Data Center, including all related documents
  • Ensure compliance with Compass’ safety procedures and requirements and reinforce a culture of safety among the Engineering and Commissioning team
  • Write, review, approve, plan, organize, and oversee the implementation of MOPs, and EOPs for the operation, maintenance, and repair HVAC, UPS, Generators, and other facility related equipment as well as mechanical and electrical systems
  • Review and develop energy conservation / energy management strategies
  • Plans and organizes responses to datacenter emergencies that may and/or do arise
  • Respond to verbal and written power requests from facility technicians and customers
  • Supervise trades and contractors performing engineering upgrades, projects, and maintenance works
  • Assist the Ops team, and provide technical guidance, with incident management of facility incidents
  • Coordinate with other CoE and Execution Pillars for the guiding principles to organize and execute physical plant maintenance and repairs pertaining to datacenters and other critical infrastructure equipment
  • Assist in the development of departmental budget including projected utility costs involving electricity and water

Vendor Management

  • Monitor compliance and manage programmatic schedule of vendors servicing equipment
  • Evaluate completed vendor work for acceptable performance
  • Review and approve vendor payments for repairs and power circuit installations
  • Ensure schedule, plan and track of vendor deliverables

Supply Chain Management

  • Accountable for the management of effective supply chain support and coordination (including procurement initiatives, purchasing, inventory management and shipping and receiving) by managing the supply chain coordinator
  • Responsible for the creation, reinforcement, and evaluation of performance of the supply chain initiatives by measuring against defined KPI Metrics


Job Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a lead mechanical or electrical engineering, operations, design, and commissioning role; Ideally experience in data center or mission critical environment; 5 years must be in a junior – middle management capacity
  • Knowledge of engineering design principles, standards, and codes


  • Bilingualism (French/English) is preferred if hired in Montreal market


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering is required. PE, or equivalent, license highly desired


  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational health and safety precautions
  • Excellent Interpersonal skills, coaching, written and oral communications abilities
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationship with contractors, Compass personnel and customers
  • Excellent knowledge of engineering, design, technology, construction, and strong mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time without a significant rest period
  • Ability to work from a ladder
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs or more on a consistent basis
  • Must have experience with assorted power tools, including drills, saws, etc
  • Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Must have Microsoft Office Suite proficiency Word, Project, Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, Project Management Visio, BMS and CMMS software

Flexibility: High level of flexibility and responsiveness is required and work beyond standard hours occurs weekly

Decision making: Responsible of making decisions with a considerable effect on internal and customer uptime. Decision making may also impact the stability of the server room environment and have a high impact on the operations of the organization

Problem solving: Problems and situations are different and require interpretation. Use of judgement is required to identify most appropriate solution from several options using prior knowledge and experience

Working Condition: Working within a data center environment. Potentially high ambient background noise. Moderate stress during most working conditions. High stress during emergencies and urgent or time sensitive situations
