Compass is recruiting for a VP, Power and Emissions in our Toronto or Dallas location.

Compass is looking for people who believe there’s a different way to deliver great projects and can easily adapt to change in a quickly growing organization. We strive to create great partnerships with our clients, contractors, and supply chain partners through transparent communications, humble and curious collaboration, and a zealous focus on consistent execution of the most important 20%.

The VP, Power and Emissions is responsible for leading the development of large scale power to the organization’s sites, reviewing emissions impacts, and considering alternative energy options like microgrids, by building relationships with energy suppliers of all types. This will include driving the analysis of electrical utility grids and bulk transmission networks, identifying risks relative to power delivery, and leading the organization and execution of infrastructure plans with the organization’s design team to secure power for our projects in North America and Europe. The ideal candidate will have relationships across the energy sector with both utilities and innovative energy sources, extensive experience researching utility infrastructure, emissions, and regulatory processes in multiple energy markets, demonstrated ability to distill advanced research into actionable recommendations, an understanding of the power needs of data centers, and be able to navigate and align internal and external stakeholder interests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain strategic relationships with in-region stakeholders and collaborate with company policy, development, and leadership teams on building senior-level connections with relevant utilities and interconnection organizations.
  • Lead initiatives that utilize all available data sources such as federal and ISO websites to analyze bulk transmission network capacity, constraints, planned upgrades, and forecasted limitations, while maintaining ongoing knowledge of proposed and planned projects that will impact power availability at the market level.
  • Provide Leadership and Collaborate with the organization’s design team and the supplier’s project development teams to submit load letters, ramp schedules, and other utility process documentation to assess and secure power for current and future projects in North American and European markets; provide stewardship of these workstreams during diligence and pre-close with development support, and transition stewardship to design and delivery teams post-close while providing ongoing support throughout project execution.
  • Lead or participate with the design team in regular meetings with utility partners and delivery teams to manage power delivery processes for projects in development.
  • Collaborate with the design team to obtain all required data for regions under review, including obtaining models aligned with project execution dates, available data to illustrate transmission topology, generation inclusions and decommissions, and seasonal variations, to understand power availability risks relative to project load ramps.
  • Work directly with the design team to develop and evaluate models to pinpoint alternative power supply strategies, which includes reviewing geographic information systems (GIS) and existing transmission infrastructure.
  • In conjunction with the design team, ensure the viability of obtaining the required emission permits for the project’s planned back-up strategy, and assist in the evaluation of alternative options.
  • Where applicable, investigate and steward the development of any micro-grid strategy required to meet emissions requirements, or required to obtain the utility power capacity required by the project.
